Alert boxes can be utilized for a variety of things, to display when an input field has not been entered properly, to display a message on document open or close, or to inform someone they’ve clicked a link to leave from your site to another. Whatever the use, the construction of them is essentially the same. The following example will generate a simple alert box based on clicking either a link or a form button.

I've noted this on scripts on the devArticles message boards and will note it now: there is no good reason to use the "javascript:" pseudo protocol. If this is a script site, teach people the right way using the javascript in an event handler ( i.e. onclick="alert('this is the right way to do an alert'); return false") and provide a default action (page or #) for the href.
